Just about everyone will experience acne at some point in their life, though with varying severity and age. There are many things you can do, however, to combat and even prevent breakouts.

The first thing you can do to help prevent the spread of acne is the hardest: do not pop or pick at the acne. This causes the lesions to become inflamed and spreads the bacteria/oil build up. This is also the main action which leads to acne scarring.

Next, knowing that the cause of acne is oil build-up beneath clogged pores, do all you can to prevent both the build-up oil and clogged pores. Be sure to wash your face twice a day with a mild soap and pat dry. Avoid oil based products and irritants such as airborne grease (common is fast food restaurants) and friction (e.g. constant pressure on the face from sports equipment).

Also, prevent acne while you sleep. Before going to bed, be sure to wash your face with a mild soap, especially if you were wearing make-up that day. Other things you can do is make sure your hair is pulled away from your face while you sleep, and wash your pillow cases often.

There are also a handful of medicines that can be prescribed by your doctor. Most are topical treatments that are usually accompanied by moisturizers. In extreme cases, your doctor may prescribe Accutane – a more powerful treatment for acne. Make sure you discuss this option thoroughly with your doctor as this pill has been known to cause birth defects.

Drug store shelves are also lined with many over-the-counter solutions to fighting acne. One of the most common ingredients in these is Benzoyl Peroxide which must be applied for several weeks before its effects can be noticed. Such is the case most acne solutions: do not expect over night results. Prescription and non-prescription solution alike usually take several weeks to months before their effectiveness sets in.

The last thing you can do is adjust your diet to help prevent acne. Though chocolate and pizza do not cause acne (as was commonly believed), a healthy diet can help ward off infections. Also, drinking plenty of water can flush your system of things detrimental to your skin.br

Acne scars are caused by injury to the skin as a result of the acne, and the way in which the body has tried to repair the damage. Different people scar in very different ways, some being much more susceptible than others. However irrespective of how vulnerable you are to scarring, it only happens when you have a severe outbreak of acne, and is rarely associated with the much more common ‘mild’ cases.

Acne scars are classified under two broad headings, one being where extra skin tissue is present and the other being where there is loss of normal skin tissue.

Scars where extra skin tissue is deposited are called raised scars or keloid scars. They are composed of extra collagen which has been laid down under the skin. Sometimes these scars can be bigger than the original spots and often last for years, with darker skin being more prone to this type of scarring.

When skin tissue is lost the scarring is often referred to as ’sunken’. These are much more common than raised scars and are characterised as ‘pits’ in the skin. There are a whole range of further classifications associated with sunken scars, all of which describe the particular way in which the scar looks. For example ice-pick sunken scars look like wounds from an ice-pick (small with jagged edges and steep sides).

Irrespective of the type of skin that you have, there are some things you can do to reduce the occurrence of acne scars, these include:

1) Proactively seek out treatment for your acne before it becomes severe. See your doctor, start some topical medication, adjust your diet, do something to prevent a few spots becoming severe acne.

2) Try not to squeeze your spots; this single activity will dramatically reduce your chance of developing acne scars.

3) Don’t pick or poke your spots with instruments such as nail files, and tweezers.

4) Use a good oil free moisturiser as part of your skin-care regime, to keep your skin supple and flexible.

Following these simple tips will ensure you don’t do long term damage to your skin.

Acne scarring is one of the great misfortunes of many people, young and old. It is basically visible markings, indentations or lumps on the surface of the skin that result from scar tissue which has shaped as part of the healing process where acne has previously ruined the original skin or the hair follicle.

Acne scarring is observed in different forms. Three of which are the main types of acne scarring: ice pick pore scars, acne out scars, and raised scars. It is interesting to know in the first place that this classification was discovered by the development of the acne scarring classification system that assists the medical professionals in the diagnosis and treatment of a number of acne scars.

The first type of acne scarring which is the ice pick pore scars are noted to be large and deep scars with detectable open pores that generally seem as if the skin has been jabbed with a thin and sharp instrument like the ice pick. This type of acne scarring is typically caused by a deep pimple or cyst that has damaged the hair follicle as its infection moved to the shell of the skin.

The second type of acne scarring, which is the acne pit scars, are characterized by a slightly sunken or depressed appearance on the skin. This type of acne scarring are basically indented and caused by pimples or cysts that have destroyed the skin and formed the scar tissue.

The third classification of acne scarring, known as the raised scars, are caused by the clumping together of a number of large cysts. When the cysts have clumped together, the scar tissue then forms which can create a lumpy mass of raised tissue on the surface of the skin, thus known as raised scars.

Acne scarring can be prevented. One of the main steps to prevent acne scarring is simply not to pick, pinch, and squeeze your pimples. Besides, there are several tactics that can help you lessen the visible signs of acne scarring. There are glycolic peels and special creams on the market today that can help soften the scar tissue and enhance the texture of the skin. Aside from that, acne scarring can be prevented or eliminated through some effective options like the dermabrasion, laser resurfacing or collagen injections. And, there are some vitamins and minerals that can also help to reduce acne scarring such as the vitamins A and E, as well as zinc.

So if you are having problems with acne scars, don’t let acne scarring control your life. Apply those mentioned ways or consult your doctor first before opting for a particular method.
